People ask why I decided to be a candidate for School Board. For me, it’s personal.
My campaign revolves around personal relationships and creating trust. It begins with my fellow CMS Board members, and then rebuilding that trust and relationship with our partners at the County Commission. Most importantly, is the relationship and commitment to our students. Every year we have thousands of children falling through the cracks of our schools. Each year they fall further behind, losing hope, confidence, and self-esteem. My personal commitment is finally to help our kids. Every kid in Every School.
Every Child is a precious gift from God and they deserve to be treated equally with our love and the opportunity for a good education.
Right now the Charlotte Mecklenburg School system has a performance rating of 6 out of 10. If we put that on the same scale our kids are judged, then it would equate to a 60 out of 100. Last I checked 60 is a failing grade. It means our school system is failing to do its job for our kids.
That is not even the worst part of this story. 60 is the performance score for the overall system. What kills me is that we actually have schools earning 1s, 2s, and 3s out of a 10 in this system. And do you know which schools have the most 1s, 2s, and 3s? The answer is our elementary schools! This blows me away and ticks me off at the same time.
If at any time kids need a good school it is in their early years. Studies show that if a kid is not up to reading level by grade 4, they will be struggling for the rest of their life. So why in the world is our School Board not laser focused on this issue? I can promise you that I will be. This is my top issue and I will make sure it is part of every School Board meeting I attend.
